Cysts are lumps which can appear anywhere in the body in any of the body organ. They appear mostly in uterus, ovaries of the women and in the gall bladder. Getting cysts in the skin is not an unusual thing.
Skin cysts are a closed sac, which occurs just beneath the skin and contains a pasty or cheesy looking, smooth substance in it. These cysts are round and form when a gland becomes plugged and begins to increase in the size slowly. It causes an enlarging bump inside the skin known as cysts and sebaceous cysts in medical language.
Such cysts have a foul odor present in them that is because of a substance called keratin present in them. Sebaceous is a kind of protein that is a cause to cerate a sac of cells called sebaceous cysts or skin cysts. So these bumps, which you can feel under the layer of your skin, are actually the sac of cells.
These cysts are usually grow on the face, neck, trunk and many times they occur in the vaginal area or the other genital parts of the men and women. Skin cysts mostly have no pain and are slow growing bumps or lumps. They move freely under the skin. One should not touch or try to remove the filled substance of the cysts because it can make the situation worse by disturbing the tenderness of the cysts and can cause swelling and some infection which can take longer time to treat and heal.
Its better to see a doctor if you find any such bump or lump inside your skin. Sometimes these bumps or lumps are called epidermal cysts. Many times the fluid, which is filled inside these cysts, becomes infected with bacteria, which results in reddened and tender lump on the skin surface.
If there is an infection then the cysts might form in an abscess, which requires incision and drainage of the infected substance from the body so that it can heal the cyst. Doctors prescribe some strong antibiotics along with this cleaning of the skin cysts in the treatment. Cysts, which are chronic and have no infection can enlarge and require nonemergent surgical treatment, which can be given by a general surgeon or a dermatologist who are specialized in the same field.
Sebaceous cysts are known to be the outcome of a swollen hair follicle, which results in cysts, which is filled with the keratin substance. If the cysts get an infection then the skin might turn red, tender, one can notice the increased temperature of the skin on the area where there bumps or lumps are present and the presence of a pale white, cheesy substance having foul odor draining from the bumps or lumps. These cysts are easily diagnosed by their appearance by a dermatologist. But if the case is complicated then a biopsy can be necessary to treat the condition as some other skin diseases may have the similar appearance as skin cysts.
Normal sebaceous cysts do not demand a cure. They often disappear on their own and have no dangerous to the skin. When these cysts have inflammation or become tender then they need attention to be given. If they are enlarging in the size, which is affecting your every day's life, then you seriously need to visit a dermatologist without getting delay. Certain cysts do require surgical cleaning whereas small-inflamed cysts can often be treated with the help of steroid medications, injections and with antibiotics.
One should be careful after the surgical removal of the cysts that it should not reappear as its not an unusual thing. Such cysts usually reappear on the same part of the skin. Always consult your doctor if you see some unusual growth, bump or lump on your body even though it has no pain. Any kind of cysts can be an alert for cancer so always be cautious to avoid the worst.
