Prevention and Treatment for scabies

Scabies in human is a contagious skin disease, which is caused by mite. These microscopic insect, or mite, which lives in infested humans, spreads scabies in a body. Because scabies in human is highly contagious it gets transmitted from one person to the other by sexual contact and by sharing same stuff as household goods etc. it can be a result of your poor hygiene.

But in many cases people who are highly hygiene conscious too get scabies if they are in constant touch with many individuals as people who are working in schools, gyms or health clubs or saloons are more prone to get it. Scabies affect some specific body parts such as web of the fingers (the gap between the fingers), wrist, elbows and back. It gives severe itching on the affected area in the night or after a hot bath. Skin scabies have common signs of skin infection like redness, pus and swelling. Situation becomes worse if the affected skin has been scratched. Scabies is caused by the allergic reaction of mite's saliva, which itches the most in the night, by a local allergic reaction of the mite's saliva.

If the scabies affects you, it is must to take a complete medical treatment. It cannot be cured on its own. You can spread it to everybody in your family if you ignore it.

The mite, which is known to cause scabies, is 1/3 millimeter long in size and has a flattened, oval shaped body with wrinkled, transverse corrugations and eight legs. Legs, which are in the front, are claw shaped and have suckers, which sucks the blood in human. When a fertilized female mite arrives on the skin surface then the infestation begins. The female mite excavates a burrow in the stratum within an hour in the body.

This mite has a 30-day life span in which the burrow extends from several millimeters to a few centimeters in length. Due to the affect of the mite elderly patients develop thick scaly skin with severe itching. When examined by the microscope, dark oval shaped Scybala are seen easily with their eggs.

These scybala may be responsible to give irritation and itching on the skin. The larvae when hatches, leaves the egg casing in the burrow, and reach maturity within 14 to 17 days. Adult mites keep repeating the cycle. This life cycle of these mites explains why patients experience few symptoms of scabies during the first month when contacted with an infested individual. When a number of mites have reached the maturity level and get spread by migration or the patients scratching, the initial common itch evolves into severe, intense generalized pruritis.

since the introduction of the cream Permethrin, the possibility for the scabies have changed drastically. It is a safer medicine because it has no nerve reactions as its side effect which most of the medicines for scabies do have. While applying whatever medication is given to you for scabies, be assure that you cover every inch of your skin with the cream. Leave the medication on the skin for at least 8 to 13 hours. Many times the medication worsen the itching the temporarily so doctor might prescribe some oral medication along with the external creams to be applied. It is not recommended to get a perception on your own that you have scabies. At time people who have scabies may not realize it so it's better to seek a medical help if you find any such itching or rash on your body or on a baby's skin.

Neem is known to cure scabies as it has some agents in it, which kills the mites causing scabies. Application of neem oil on the skin and keep neem leaves in the bedding helps in keeping the mites at bay.
