Yucca for hair loss

illustration of yucca plant
Yucca may have been the ultimate plant resource for Native Americans in the southwestern United States. It is a food source. It is a fiber source for woven baskets. And it can be used for myriad medicinal purposes, including shampoo. Yucca root will lather up with minimal effort. To say that it will cure baldness is a stretch, but yucca shampoo is an excellent hair cleanser and scalp treatment. Please note that we are talking about "yucca," not "yuca," which is a type of cassava and a potato-like food source.

Yucca as a remedy for hair-loss

Method

  • Take a piece of yucca root (this includes the above-ground "trunk" of the plant) and peel off the brown outer layer to expose the fleshy white interior.
  • Smash the root to pieces with a hammer.
  • Take a chunk and run it under water; it will lather up like a bar of soap.
  • Shampoo and rinse thoroughly.
  • Alternatively yucca root powder can be purchased online.

Why yucca works

Yucca contains a high concentration of saponins, a natural detergent. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and is beneficial for dandruff and itchy scalp.

Precautions

This is for external use only. Long-term use of yucca is not recommended; use only as a periodic treatment.
